What is the Best Approach to Teaching writing in the Indonesian Context: Text-based, process-based or Genre-Based Approaches?

By Ika Lestari Damayanti

This paper reviews some approaches to writing such as product-based approaches, process-based approaches and social constructivism by examining carefully each approach’s strengths and weaknesses and by relating them to writing instruction in Indonesian context. Text-based approaches which cover product-based and social constructivism put great emphasis on linguistic features such as lexico-grammatical and discursive patterning. On the other hand, the process-based approaches focus on the writers rather than on the text. In addition to these two big approaches, a genre-process approach emerges as a way to get a balance and make complimentary effects among these approaches.
